Leaders criticized for neglecting saccos

Politicians in Nyanza and Western regions have been criticized for not putting enough efforts to empower the local people through formation of Saccos.
Atyang Atyang a renowned activist who is also the secretary general of Gakwamba Farmers Co-operative society observed that unlike in Kisii and Nyamira Counties where the political leadership have demonstrated concern and interest in improving local saccos, their counterparts in Luo Nyanza and Western region are interested in other issues.
Ushuru Sacco regional chairman Awuor Owuor noted that going by the economies of scale; the national saccos have the ability to foster meaningful growth and urged locals to consider subscribing to them to advance.
He revealed that Ushuru Sacco was putting up a Sh300 million plaza in Kisumu town which will go a long way in impacting on the economic livelihoods of members.
“Ushuru has a national membership of 6000”, stated Awuor.
He also noted that their members enjoy good dividends unlike the local Saccos that struggle for capital base and hardly get investments.
The Ushuru Sacco regional chair, however, counseled local Saccos to inculcate the culture of saving reiterating that focus should shift to investments and not luxury.
