Meru market traders elect their leaders

Makutano Market traders from Meru County have elected leaders to govern the activity of the market. The elections which are held after three years saw traders coming together to have new leadership to steer the market forward.

The traders had Samuel Gitonga reelected as the Chairman for the fourth consecutive time; Elijoy Kagwiria won the treasurer seat while Kagwiria Caroline clinched the Secretary post.

John Kimathi was elected Vice Chairman, Geoffrey Kimani as Vice Secretary and Brian Mutuma as Committee member.

Gitonga who the elected chairman of the four storey market said his victory was attributed to God as he had prayed and was able to retain the seat for the fourth time.

“I also want to thank the people for electing me once again. I will continue serving them well as a humble and listening leader. My victory was not easy this time round but I thank God and those who believed in me,” he said.

Gitonga said he will work hard to make sure that no trader is harassed, intimidated or treated unfairly. He promised to work with the county government in a bid to better the welfare of the market.

He said he will seek an audience with Meru governor Isaac Mutuma on some of the grievances in the market.

Brian Mutuma, the committee member representing the youth said he will try to gather new ideas and agenda from youth to better the market for all traders in order to uplift their welfare and create a safe environment in market to attract more customers.

“I want to urge the youth to come and start businesses even in the market. They should not wait for employment,” he said.

Kimani the elected vice secretary thanked the people for ensuring there is democracy. He said they will deliver their pledges to traders.

Rose Karimi, a trader at the market said she is happy that the elections were free, fair and peaceful.

“I urge those who lost to accept and move on. Those who won should work hard to deliver on their promises” Karimi said.
