Meru MCAs table Ksh12 billion budget estimates with Agriculture given priority

The Meru County Assembly has officially tabled the 2025/2026 itemized budget estimates totaling Ksh 12 billion, with priority being given to agricultural development and accountability in public funds use.

The budget was presented on the floor of the Assembly by the Budget Committee Chairperson, Martin Makasi, who noted that previous budget disagreements were among the key factors that contributed to the past impeachment attempts of the former Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Given Meru’s heavy reliance on agriculture production, the new budget proposes the reintroduction of agricultural extension officers at the ward level to support farmers with modern farming practices.

Many farmers have long decried the lack of expert guidance, which has resulted in poor yields and misuse of farm inputs.

Ken Mbwiria, a mixed crop farmer from Egoji, welcomed the move, stating that farmers have been struggling due to the absence of agricultural advisors.

“We ended up misusing fertilizers and other farm chemicals, leading to waste and reduced productivity. In the old days, farming was more profitable because we had proper guidance,” he said.

Igoji West MCA Mutembei Mbiuki emphasized that the current cooperative relationship between the executive arm of government led by governor Isaac Mutuma and the County Assembly is vital in ensuring residents benefit from development projects.

However, MCAs have issued a stern warning, vowing to impeach any county official who attempts to embezzle the allocated funds meant for county development.
