Nakuru dairy farmers have vowed that they will not allow the privatization of the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC).

Led by Muchemi Nderitu, the farmers held protests in Nakuru City to express their opposition to the proposition which they termed as ill-advised.

He said that the sale of the milk processor will lead to the imminent downfall of the dairy sector, emphasizing that the presence of New KCC in the market is crucial to maintaining reasonable milk prices for the benefit of the farmers.

Ann Wachira, one of the farmers, said that when the New KCC was revamped by former late President Mwai Kibaki, the main aim was to ensure that farmers do not sell their milk at throw-away prices.

She noted that the sector is the lifeline for thousands of people saying that if sold, the government will have contributed to massive unemployment instead of creating more jobs as it had promised during election campaigns.

“At the moment, we are going through a glut and we have seen KCC play a critical role by buying milk from farmers cushioning them from making losses,” she said.
