No more salary delays for Posta staff, CS Owalo says

ICT and Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo has said that payment of staff salaries at the Postal Corporation of Kenya shall be prioritized from now on and salary delays will be a thing of the past.

This is part of transformational plans by the government to position the institution to become a viable e-commerce and logistics hub.

Owalo said that the Ministry is keen on making staff motivation a top priority to ensure optimum delivery of services in addition to upgrading existing infrastructure.

The CS noted that salary delays had seen several staff neglect duty in the past thus sinking the giant government agency.

“When we came into office, we had about five months of salary arrears, which we have been struggling to offset. As at December, we had managed to clear Ksh435 million,” he said.

“Moving forward, I have instructed the management of Posta to ensure that the first item of expenditure every month is salary. I don’t want to see a situation where we are lagging in terms of payment of staff salaries,” he added.

Owalo decried poor leadership as the major problem for Posta where there was zero implementation of policies and plans.

He affirmed that they have already begun charting a path of transformational leadership which will include risk-taking and ‘stepping on people’s toes’ whom he said are benefitting from the status quo.

The CS explained that the government is on track to bring a partner on board to aid the transition into the e-commerce sector.

“We are on the verge of acquiring a partner to provide an e-commerce platform, and at the tail end of acquiring a service provider for a payment gateway,” he said.

“Posta is already doing last-mile delivery of passports and medical supplies, additionally the transformation journey of Posta will require divergence in thinking and a tinge of creativity,” he added.
