- Large Saccos continue to hold most of the sector’s deposits
- Hundreds of smaller societies account for a much smaller share
- Government-based Saccos hold the largest deposits by membership category
Deposits remain heavily concentrated among a small group of large societies, with 46 Saccos controlling nearly 70 per cent of the sector’s total deposits in 2025.
The 2025 Sacco Supervision Annual Report shows that Saccos holding more than Ksh 5 billion in deposits accounted for 69.95 per cent, or Ksh 582.54 billion, of the industry’s total deposits.
This group comprised just 46 regulated Saccos out of the 357 societies operating during the year. Their share increased from 65.83 per cent in 2024.
In contrast, 241 Saccos with deposits below Ksh 1 billion accounted for only 9.74 per cent of total industry deposits, equivalent to Ksh 81.11 billion.

Meanwhile, the report shows that the middle group also held a smaller share. The 70 Saccos with deposits between Ksh 1 billion and Ksh 5 billion controlled 20.31 per cent, or Ksh 169.15 billion, of total deposits.
Overall, deposits in regulated Saccos increased from Ksh 749.43 billion in 2024 to Ksh 832.80 billion in 2025.
Similarly, the concentration is also visible across fields of membership. Government-based Saccos accounted for the largest share, holding Ksh 539.55 billion, equivalent to 64.79 per cent of total industry deposits.
Agriculture-based Saccos held Ksh 92.86 billion, while community-based societies held Ksh 103.97 billion and private sector-based Saccos had Ksh 96.43 billion.
