Open letter to Boda Boda riders from a grateful citizen

Dear Boda boda Riders

I write this epistle to commend you for the indispensable role you play in our communities. Whether in the bustling streets of our cities or in the quiet corners of our villages, you remain a cornerstone of our transport system, serving millions with dedication, courage, and resilience.

You are the unsung heroes of modern mobility, always ready to ferry passengers to their destinations, braving all kinds of weather, roads, and situations. It is said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” and you pay that rent every single day by transporting people to where they need to go. You are indeed the lifeblood of the towns, villages, and cities you serve.

The boda boda sector is not just a means of transport; it is a lifeline for many families. You, the riders, provide a critical service that sustains livelihoods and connects people to opportunities. Whether it’s rushing a child to school, delivering vital goods, or ensuring that someone makes it to a hospital in time, you are there. Without you, many would be stranded, and the wheels of daily life would slow down. As the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” You, dear riders, are the epitome of togetherness, enabling us all to go far in our daily pursuits.

In your hands, you carry the hopes, dreams, and sometimes the very lives of your passengers. This is no small responsibility. The roads may be rough, the weather may be harsh, and clients may sometimes be difficult, but you soldier on, driven by the will to earn a decent living. As the great poet Khalil Gibran once said, “Work is love made visible.” Through your work, we see your love for your families, for the community, and for the betterment of your own lives.

Your journey is not an easy one. Every day, you encounter all kinds of challenges: from clients who are difficult or dismissive, to the dangers of poor roads and reckless drivers, to the rising cost of fuel and maintenance for your bikes. Some clients will praise you for your timeliness and efficiency, while others may unfairly criticize you for things beyond your control. Yet, through it all, you persevere. Your resilience is a testament to your strength of character.

It is said that “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” You endure the challenges of your work, knowing that your efforts provide for your families and create a better future for your children. You do not give up when the road gets tough; instead, you press on, because you know that every successful ride brings you closer to your goals.

Your work, however, does not come without risks. You brave dangerous roads, navigate through heavy traffic, and sometimes carry heavy loads. Despite these risks, you continue to serve. The world sees you as just a boda boda rider, but you are so much more—a provider, a protector, and a pillar of society.

In the hustle and bustle of your work, it is easy to neglect self-care, but I urge you to consider hygiene as an essential part of your service. Your boda boda jackets, the symbol of your trade, are also a representation of your professionalism. As the saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Keeping your jackets and gear clean is not just about appearances; it’s about respecting yourself and your clients. You interact with people from all walks of life, and your hygiene speaks volumes about the pride you take in your work.

Regular washing of your jackets and helmets, ensuring that your bike is in good condition, and maintaining personal cleanliness are all part of ensuring that your clients feel comfortable and safe when they ride with you.

When you take care of yourself and your equipment, you show that you value not only your work but also the people you serve. A clean jacket, a well-maintained bike, and a friendly smile can turn a simple ride into a pleasant experience for your clients.

Remember, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” The small steps you take towards cleanliness and professionalism will reflect in the quality of service you provide, and ultimately, in the respect and trust you earn from your customers.

As we look to the future, the boda boda sector will continue to grow and evolve. With it, you must also grow. Take pride in your work, for you are not just transporting people – you are transporting dreams, opportunities, and hope. Continue to serve with dignity, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence.

Let the words of Confucius guide you: “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Each day you get on your bike, you are moving mountains in your own way. Through your hard work, you are shaping the future, not only for yourself but for the communities you serve.

I urge you to stay safe, keep your spirit of service alive, and always remember the power of your contribution to society. The world may not always see the sacrifices you make, but we, your community, recognize your value and salute you. You are the heartbeat of our streets, the navigators of our daily lives, and the champions of our journeys. Thank you for your service.

Yours in appreciation,

Kamomonti wa Kiambati

A grateful citizen.
