State grants taxpayers waiver on late filing of Penalties and Interest

KRA

The government has announced a significant relief for taxpayers, granting a waiver of penalties and interest on late filing of Income Tax returns for the year 2024. This decision comes after the National Treasury received a request from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to approve the waiver.

The waiver, which applies to returns, filed by July 5th, 2025, addresses issues caused by a disruption in the normal functioning of both the return filing and payment modules within the iTax system. This disruption was attributed to the high volume of taxpayers attempting to file income tax returns on June 30th, 2025.

This move is expected to alleviate the burden on individuals and businesses affected by the iTax system’s performance issues during the filing period.

According to a letter signed by the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, dated July 25th, 2025, written to the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority, Humphrey Mulongo, the waiver was granted “after due consideration and in the general public interest of enhancing tax morale.”

Mbadi confirmed the waiver, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting taxpayers who were affected by system challenges.
