Police have recovered part of 7,354 bags of fertilizer stolen from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Maua, Meru County.

Eight suspects were also arrested in connection with the looting and several vehicles believed to have been used in ferrying fertilizer including motorbikes and probox cars have been impounded.

The looting happened on June 25, 2025 during Gen Z protests, when a group of people stormed the depot, looting fertilizer, cereals, office supplies, and vandalized the property.

According to the police statement, the invaders torched the facility’s main office and destroyed a mobile seed dryer.

Depot Manager Abednego Sangolo said the facility lost fertilizers that are more than Sh29 million and equipment destroyed.

Igembe South OCPD Eliakim Silgich said police were outnumbered by the crowd that had invaded the facility. He said police will not allow such incidents in the future.

The government has ordered all NCPB depots across the country to install working CCTV systems to enhance security, aid investigations, and deter similar robbery incidents in future.

The fertilizer is a vital input for farmers across the region, farmers will now be forced to travel far to get the commodity which is essential this planting season.
