Kenyan small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) are set to benefit from free Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital skills training through a new partnership between I&M Bank and Google, aimed at boosting competitiveness in an increasingly digital economy.

The initiative will equip entrepreneurs with practical knowledge in AI tools, digital marketing, business strategy and leadership development, helping firms adapt to rapid technological changes that are reshaping how goods and services are produced, marketed and delivered.

The programme targets micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which account for more than 80 per cent of employment in Kenya. Despite their critical role in the economy, the sector continues to face structural challenges, including low levels of digital adoption, skills gaps and limited access to technology‑driven growth opportunities.

Under the partnership, eligible customers will be enrolled in the Google Hustle Academy, a structured training programme designed to help entrepreneurs scale operations, improve efficiency and access new markets using digital tools.

I&M Bank said the collaboration reflects a broader shift among financial institutions seeking to go beyond traditional lending by integrating capacity building and technology access into the support they offer businesses.

“Being on your side means making sure our customers aren’t left behind in the AI revolution,” said Shameer Patel, Director Retail & Business Banking. “We recognise that access to capital is only part of what it takes to build a resilient business. Today’s businesses also need knowledge, technology, and capability‑building support to thrive. By partnering with Google, we are expanding the value we offer customers and deepening our role as a true growth partner to Kenya’s entrepreneurial community.”

The Google Hustle Academy, launched in 2022, has already trained thousands of SMEs across Africa through intensive bootcamp‑style sessions focused on digital transformation, business growth and emerging technologies, including AI.

Google reports that the programme has reached more than 18,500 entrepreneurs across Sub‑Saharan Africa, with women accounting for more than half of all participants. Demand continues to grow for practical skills that support enterprise expansion in the digital economy.
