President William Ruto has announced a Ksh45 billion investment in affordable housing projects across Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir counties, describing it as one of the most significant housing investments in Northern Kenya since Independence.
In a statement shared on his X account after hosting leaders from the three counties at the Wajir State Lodge, the President said the housing programme forms part of a broader development agenda aimed at accelerating socio-economic growth in the region.
“Briefed them on the investment of over Ksh45 billion in affordable housing projects in the three counties, a commitment that represents one of the most significant housing investments in the region since Independence,” President Ruto stated.
The Head of State said his administration is prioritising transformative infrastructure and development projects to unlock the region’s economic potential and address decades of historical marginalisation.
Among the flagship projects highlighted was the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, under which the government is investing more than Ksh100 billion in the construction of the Isiolo-Mandera road.

According to the President, the project is expected to improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and stimulate economic opportunities across Northern Kenya.
Ruto also revealed that the 500-kilometre Lamu-Garissa-Isiolo road is currently more than halfway complete and remains on course for completion next year.
“Once finalised, the road will open up new opportunities for commerce and development,” he said.
In the aviation sector, the President pledged a Ksh700 million upgrade of Wajir Airport. The project is expected to commence upon completion of the ongoing expansion of Garissa Airport, further enhancing transport infrastructure in the region.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equitable development, assuring residents that Northern Kenya would receive its fair share of national resources and development opportunities.
The announcement comes as the government intensifies efforts to improve infrastructure, housing, and public services in previously underserved regions as part of its broader national development agenda.
