- M-KOPA expands electric vehicle financing to tuk tuks.
- The company has already financed more than 10,000 electric motorcycles.
- Lower running costs could accelerate Kenya’s shift to electric transport.
M-KOPA is expanding its pay-as-you-go electric mobility financing model to tuk tuks, after financing more than 10,000 electric motorcycles in Kenya. The move targets another major segment of the country’s commercial transport market.
The milestone signals growing demand for electric two-wheelers. According to M-KOPA, customers using its financed motorcycles save an average of Ksh530 a day through lower energy and maintenance costs, alongside access to battery swapping infrastructure.
Brian Njao, M-KOPA’s General Manager for Mobility, said the company is now applying the same financing approach to electric tuk tuks. This allows operators to spread the cost of the vehicles rather than carrying the full upfront purchase cost.

M-KOPA currently finances electric motorcycles from manufacturers including Ampersand, Roam and Spiro. Its mobility platform says electric motorcycle users can save up to 30% on daily costs, highlighting the operating cost advantage that is central to the company’s financing proposition.
The expansion comes as Kenya pushes electric mobility through its National Electric Mobility Policy, which was launched in February 2026. The policy provides incentives for electric transport, including zero-rated VAT on electric buses, bicycles, motorcycles and lithium-ion batteries, alongside other measures aimed at accelerating adoption.
For M-KOPA, moving into tuk tuks takes its financing model beyond motorcycles and into a larger three-wheeler market. Here, reducing the initial cost of acquiring an electric vehicle could determine how quickly operators switch from petrol-powered transport.
