Use of modern technology will boost farmers’ activities and improve on their income.
This was the overriding message during the 10th Agribusiness Expo organized by Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST).
The two-day exhibition was characterized by new technological innovations and attracted thousands of participants eager to learn new farming methods through use of technology.
It had the theme, enhanced agribusiness through technological innovations.
Livestock farming, machinery and crop production among others dominated the expo with various stakeholders exhibiting outstanding technological advancement towards boosting food production in line with the Governments Big Four Agenda. Other sectors were also well presented.
Dan Mutai, the RVIST Principal, noted that the Agri-business Expo is a significant event on the institution’s calendar as it aims at promoting agri-business in the country.
“The key objective of the Expo is to create a platform for farmers to access quality information that helps them in engaging in best farming practices to enhance productivity in agribusiness,” Mutai said.
Over 7,000 farmers participated in the event this year according to the principal.
“The Expo provides farmers with diverse opportunities in accessing information on dairy cow and calf management, climate, smart agricultural practices, feed formulation/fodder, risks mitigation, aggregation of commodities, market research and linkages among others.
Participation in this event also affords farmers a golden opportunity of taking part in our annual auction of pedigree animals, a very popular event in the show,” he said.
Nakuru County Executive Committee Member in charge of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Dr Immaculate Maina, said that the event had immensely transformed agriculture sector in the area. He noted Nakuru County was ranked number one in national contribution to agriculture output and second to Nairobi County in Gross Domestic products.
“We intend to increase productivity and value addition in agriculture and other productive sectors. This will be achieved through adoption of new innovations and modern technologies across the various value chains,” she said.
