The African Confederation of Co-operative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) has embarked on a transformative learning visit to the Redwood Credit Union in California, USA, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen and modernize Africa’s credit union movement.
The high-level delegation comprises eminent cooperative leaders from across Africa and senior government officials, led by Patrick Kilemi, Principal Secretary, State Department of Cooperatives (Kenya).
The visit aims to promote knowledge exchange, build institutional capacity, and foster global partnerships that support sustainable cooperative growth across the continent.
Speaking during the visit, Brett Martinez, President and CEO of Redwood Credit Union, underscored the central role of teamwork and shared values in delivering impact.
“Our ability to make a meaningful impact in the community starts with two things: a strong, engaged membership and a professional team that shares our values and passion for service,” said Martinez.
ACCOSCA’s Executive Director, George Ombado, described the initiative as a model of cross-border collaboration that unites credit unions under a common vision.
“This initiative is a powerful example of how credit unions can transcend borders to share knowledge, values, and a common mission,” he noted.

A highlight of the visit was an inspiring session with Mike McGuire, President pro tempore of the California State Senate, who encouraged the African leaders to reflect on the shared cooperative values of service, accountability, and member-centered leadership.
The delegation also held a joint engagement with Congressman Mike Thompson and Senate President pro tempore Mike McGuire, PS Kilemi said the discussions centered on the role of advocacy in driving global impact for credit unions, supporting socio-economic growth, eradicating poverty, and building resilient cooperative value chains.
The study visit marks a significant step in ACCOSCA’s mission to build a dynamic, self-sustaining credit union sector in Africa anchored on global best practices and the principles of cooperation, transparency, and inclusive development.
