Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Matungu Sub-County are set for a boost after Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa handed out Ksh5 million in grants to support grassroots businesses and income-generating activities.
Issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, through the Kakamega County Social Protection Grants Programme, the funds will benefit 100 groups drawn from the five wards of Matungu Sub-County.
Each ward received Ksh1 million to support 20 groups, with every beneficiary group getting Ksh50,000 to invest in viable enterprises and other income-boosting activities.
Beneficiaries include women, youth, persons with disabilities and widows, who are expected to use the funds to establish or expand small businesses, strengthen livelihoods and create sustainable sources of income.
Speaking during the disbursement, Governor Barasa said the programme forms part of his administration’s efforts to expand economic opportunities and empower vulnerable groups to participate in income-generating activities.

Notably, the Matungu allocation is part of a wider Ksh60 million countywide Social Protection Grants Programme targeting 1,200 groups across Kakamega’s 60 wards.
Overall, the programme comprises 540 women’s groups, 240 youth groups, 300 widows’ groups and 120 groups representing persons living with disabilities.
Barasa urged beneficiaries to use the grants prudently, investing in sustainable businesses capable of generating regular income and improving their economic wellbeing.
According to the county government, the grants complement other initiatives targeting small businesses, including financing through the Kakamega Microfinance Corporation, which has disbursed more than Ksh140 million over the past four years.
The countywide rollout will continue in Lugari Sub-County, next in line to receive its allocation.
