Kenya launches SITPA to drive SACCOs’ digital transformation

Kenya has officially launched the Sacco IT Professionals Association (SITPA), a new initiative aimed at strengthening the digital capabilities of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs).

The launch took place on July 9,  2025, at the Mwalimu National DT SACCO Building in Nairobi.

SITPA brings together IT professionals working in SACCOs across the country. Its goal is to promote the use of digital tools, improve cyber security, set common IT standards and support innovation within the cooperative sector.

Stakeholders believe the association will help SACCOs become more efficient, competitive and responsive to the needs of their members.

Kenya’s SACCO sector plays a major role in financial inclusion, especially in rural and underserved areas. However, many SACCOs face challenges in adopting and managing modern technology. SITPA aims to bridge this gap by offering training, promoting best practices and creating a platform for collaboration among SACCO IT teams.

The association also plans to work closely with regulators like SASRA and government agencies to ensure that SACCOs meet compliance requirements while embracing innovation.

Through SITPA, SACCOs will also have a stronger voice when dealing with technology vendors and service providers.

SITPA’s launch supports broader government efforts to digitize financial services and bring more Kenyans into the formal economy. By improving the digital capacity of SACCOs, the initiative is expected to boost transparency, speed up services and increase trust among members.

As digital finance continues to grow in Kenya, SITPA is expected to play a central role in preparing SACCOs for the future.

The event was attended by key stakeholders including the PS for the State Department for Cooperatives, Patrick Kilemi, a representative of the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) and dignitaries from professional bodies such as the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) and Law Society of Kenya (LSK). Founding members and SITPA’s interim leadership team were also present: Robert Karioki (Chairman), Christine Kakuvi (Vice‑Chair), and Harrison Muhia (Secretary) among others
