The agriculture and livestock developmentĀ Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe has held high level talks with a leading United Kingdom (UK) based tea distributor, exploring bold new ways to market Kenyan tea to the world, including serving it to athletes at the prestigious London Marathon.
Kagwe met with Nadeem Ahmed, Chairman of Global Tea and Commodities Limited, a firm that manufactures, packages and distributes Kericho Gold tea across the United Kingdom market. Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK, Maurice Makoloo, and Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) Chief Executive Officer Willy Mutai also attended the meeting.
The delegation discussed opportunities to deepen the global profile of Kenyan tea, with the London Marathon emerging as one potential platform through which the brand could gain wider international visibility by being served to Kenyan athletes competing in the race.

The talks come as Global Tea and Commodities Limited moves to establish what would be the first decaffeinated tea processing facility of its kind on the African continent. The multimillion dollar plant will be dedicated to the packaging, branding, and production of decaffeinated Kenyan tea.
The facility is scheduled for an official launch in January 2027, with leading UK brand owners and major supermarket chains expected to attend. The partners are set to use the plant to produce retail ready tea products destined for the UK and broader European markets.
Kagwe commended the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening the global brand recognition of Kenyan tea, and reaffirmed the government’s full support for its successful implementation.
