Nyeri set to launch the Nyeri County Youth Development Policy 2023

The Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services held a press briefing to announce the upcoming launch of the Nyeri County Youth Development Policy 2023. The event is set for November 29, 2024, at Moi Nyeri Complex School.

Led by Gender CECM Esther Ndung’u, the briefing highlighted the policy’s transformative agenda aimed at addressing the needs of Nyeri’s youth population, which currently exceeds 203,000. The policy seeks to integrate youth issues into all county programmes, policies, and plans, ensuring their voices and concerns are adequately addressed.

Key objectives of the policy include, Empowering youth in socio-economic development, promoting holistic health and access to healthcare, Advancing career development and transformative youth empowerment, mainstreaming youth interventions across all county departments and activities.

The policy places special emphasis on priority groups such as youth with disabilities, street youth, those in conflicts with the law and individuals living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic diseases.

Notably, this initiative will make Nyeri County the first in the Central Region Economic Bloc (CEREB) to launch such a comprehensive youth policy and the third county in Kenya to achieve this milestone, following Makueni and Kakamega.

Esther Ndung’u lauded the collaborative effort that led to the creation of the document, which began in 2021. “This has been an inclusive and consultative process involving youth organizations, sectorial groups, government agencies, development partners, civil society and the private sector,” she said.
