Oparanya rallies Western Kenya counties to form SACCOs, revitalize coffee farming

Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Oparanya has urged counties in Western Kenya to strengthen cooperative structures and revitalize coffee farming as part of efforts to boost financial inclusion and household incomes.

Speaking after a meeting with promoters and delegates from Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Vihiga and Kakamega, Oparanya described the engagement as “productive,” noting that the discussions centered on building strong SACCOs to mobilize local resources and create sustainable economic opportunities.

“The discussions focused on strengthening cooperative structures as a strategic pathway to enhance financial inclusion, mobilize local resources and create sustainable economic opportunities for our people,” he said.

Oparanya emphasized that coffee farming remains a critical pillar in the region’s economic revival. He said the government’s agenda is anchored on value addition, improved incomes, and poverty reduction.

“The revitalization of coffee farming, alongside the establishment of strong and accountable SACCOs, remains a key pillar in our broader agenda to drive value addition, increase household incomes and ultimately move our people out of poverty,” Oparanya stated.

He added that the ministry is working closely with legislators to ensure the success of the initiative. “We are working with all Members of Parliament to advance ongoing coffee revitalization efforts in Western Kenya for the benefit of our people,” Oparanya stated

He added that SACCOs are vital in empowering grassroots communities, providing access to affordable credit, and ensuring accountability in cooperative finance. Oparanya assured of continued support for initiatives that will strengthen cooperative societies and expand opportunities for farmers.
