- AI is helping businesses cut costs, speed up operations and access specialised capabilities.
- SMEs that use AI effectively could gain an edge in productivity, competitiveness and growth.
Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into Kenyan small and medium enterprises (SMEs), but the next phase of adoption is likely to be defined more by whether SMEs can turn it into measurable returns.
The question is no longer just whether Kenyan SMEs are using AI, but whether the technology is transforming their operations by reducing costs, boosting productivity, increasing sales or creating new sources of revenue.
SME owners are expected to build greater awareness of AI trends and invest in basic digital literacy and training programmes to ease workflow transitions. Doing so will be crucial to driving meaningful improvement and expansion across the sector.
According to recent research, Kenya has moved rapidly into AI adoption, with businesses deploying the technology in customer service, software development, marketing, credit scoring, fraud detection and other functions. But the gap between deploying AI and scaling it across an organisation remains significant.
For SMEs, AI is lowering the cost of accessing capabilities that previously required specialists or major investment in technology. Businesses can now use AI tools to handle tasks such as marketing, customer service, data analysis, bookkeeping and content creation without hiring large teams or buying expensive software. This allows SMEs to cut costs, work more efficiently and compete with larger companies while directing more resources toward growth and expansion.

AI is also compressing the time needed to perform tasks that previously demanded substantial human effort, making operations faster. This can level the playing field, allowing SMEs to scale quickly and compete with larger firms, in turn boosting profits and household incomes.
For Kenyan SMEs, AI adoption is becoming less about keeping up with technology and more about achieving clear business results.
As tools become more affordable and accessible, SMEs that use AI effectively stand to reduce costs, improve productivity, strengthen competitiveness and unlock new opportunities for growth.
