MPs have inspected a students’ hostel project at Homa Bay Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) that will house 580 learners once complete.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works visited the site as part of its oversight of Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) projects. The team, chaired by Hon. Joseph Kipkosgei Tonui, assessed construction progress and the challenges slowing delivery. Members also reviewed what is needed to keep the development on schedule.

Once finished, the hostel will ease pressure on existing accommodation at the college. It is also expected to give students a better environment for learning and for their welfare.

Plans for the facility are extensive. A seven storey block will hold 145 units, each with four beds. Alongside it will sit two study rooms, two shops, food stalls, a minimart and a laundromat, among other commercial facilities.

Beyond the hostel itself, the project includes a full set of supporting infrastructure. This covers roads, parking, a sewer system, an underground water tank and a wastewater treatment plant. A guardhouse and a powerhouse complete the list.

Separately, the committee toured Rodi Kopany ESP Market, which lawmakers found to be fully complete except for external civil works. Its completion is expected to strengthen local trading infrastructure. In turn, small-scale traders should gain a better place to do business.
