The British Red Cross Society jointly with Kenya Red Cross Society, spent Ksh7 million to support the implementation of farmers development projects in Garashi and Kakuyuni wards in Magarini sub county in Kilifi county.
Speaking to Sacco Review in her office in Malindi town recently, Kenya Red Cross Society, Kilifi county Coordinator, Kawthar Alwy Mohammed revealed that the two organisations decided to support farmers development projects in the two wards following floods disaster last year which destroyed crops and water systems.
She disclosed that out of the Ksh7 million, Ksh4 million was used to drill water boreholes at Tsungutsunguni village in Garashi ward to enable farmers get water supply closer at their door footsteps for domestic consumption as well as for small scale irrigation activities.
The County Coordinator, further revealed that the Organisations also donated Solars to the farmers to enable them pump water to irrigate their crops to earn income.
“This move was intended to empower local farmers economically, hence avoid over reliance on other people,” noted Mohammed.

Additionally, she revealed that the two Organisations further spent Ksh3 million to dig a two kilometer water pipeline at Madunguni village in Kakuyuni ward to enable local farmers get water supply near them, hence carry out their daily activities more effectively and efficiently.
At the same time, Mohammed added that two water kiosks were also built for local farmers at Madunguni village to enable them sell water and earn income.
“The two constructed water kiosks are income generating projects for the farmers at Madfunguni village,” explained Mohammed.
The County Red Cross Society Coordinator revealed that the Organisations distributed relief seeds last year to farmers from 180 households in Magarini sub county in Kilifi County to plant to get food, following the floods disaster which adversely affected them.
