Kisumu social services urge journalists’ groups to embrace income-generating ventures

The Department of Social Services in Kisumu Central Sub-County has encouraged journalists’ self-help groups to diversify into income-generating activities as a way of strengthening their economic base and empowering members.

Speaking during elections for new office bearers of the Kisumu Media Self-Help Group, formerly known as the Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN), departmental official Lilian Ongwosi said ventures such as fund drives, transport businesses, fines for errant members, and commercial enterprises could provide sustainable revenue streams. She noted that such initiatives would go a long way in uplifting journalists in Kisumu County and beyond.

The elections, held at the Kisumu Media Hub, ushered in a new-look leadership committed to safeguarding the group’s objectives and steering it toward a prosperous, member-focused future. Rushdie Oudia of the Nation Media Group was elected Chairman, with Harold Odhiambo of the Standard Media Group as his deputy. Chris Mahandaria of the Kenya News Agency (KNA) secured the position of Secretary General, while Maureen Odiwuor was elected unopposed as Treasurer.

Oudia, embarking on his second stint at the helm after previously leading KJN from 2018 to 2023, outlined immediate priorities for the group. He pledged to align the constitution with current government regulations to ensure compliance and stability. “In recent years, we have had our challenges, but this move heralds a new beginning for members to chart their way forward, united with a purpose,” he said. He promised to spearhead projects that are genuinely member-centric, focusing on training and capacity-building programs to empower journalists.

Ongwosi also played a key role in guiding members through a hybrid Annual General Meeting, where she introduced nine strategic modules designed to strengthen governance and operations. Members described the training as timely and eye-opening, noting that it provided practical insights into how the group can collectively improve its structures.

The newly elected officials will serve a three-year term, continuing the legacy of past leaders. Oudia’s return follows in the footsteps of pioneer chairman Dickson Odhiambo, currently of Citizen Voice. His earlier tenure was succeeded by the late Dickens Wasonga (2023–2024), with brief transitional leadership provided by Ms. Doreen Magak of Nation Media and Josphat Odhiambo of Royal Media.

Concluding his address, Oudia rallied members with a message of optimism and ambition. “The future is bright. Let us make a bold step as members and seize the opportunities that come our way,” he said, underscoring the group’s renewed commitment to unity, empowerment, and sustainable growth.
