The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Union (EU) under the Digital Land Governance Programme, has officially launched the GIS Based Database Systems Implementation Guideline in Kisumu County.
The launch according to the officials, marks a momentous journey towards digitization of the processes at the Council of Governors, the National Land Commission and the County Governments and handed over GIS equipment’s, County.
FAO Assistant Representative in Kenya Hamisi Williams said the areas of engagements will involve land use and data storage.
Speaking in Kisumu during the opening of a land data laboratory which has been installed in partnership with the County Government, Williams said other sectors will be also be roped in.

By utilizing GIS technology and digital platforms, he said FAO hopes to bridge divides, empower communities, and foster a sense of belonging. He said land is a critical issue which must be handled with care.
Williams who was flanked by the executive committee member for finance George Okong’o and his land counterpart Charles K’onyango said the programme will also be rolled down to the judiciary, pointing out that most cases in courts revolved around hence the need to expedite them as fast as possible.
He said most land parcels which have been entangled in courts cannot be put to agricultural use, reiterating that they are working to see that such disputes are dispensed with very first.
The official said data on land is very vital in terms of identify and rate payments at the end of the day.
