Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has thrown his weight behind the Likuyani Afya, Taaluma na Maendeleo (ATM) Sacco’s bid to establish an animal feeds processing plant, pledging the county government’s full support for the initiative at a fundraising event held at Ivugwi Secondary School in Likuyani Ward.

The project, which seeks to strengthen the agricultural value chain and create economic opportunities for farmers and youth in Likuyani Sub-County, drew a high-powered gathering of national and regional leaders, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Likuyani Member of Parliament Innocent Mugabe.

Governor Barasa said the animal feed processing plant aligns with his administration’s agenda on wealth creation, industrialisation, and job creation, reaffirming his government’s commitment to transforming Likuyani into a key agricultural and industrial hub through strategic investments in agribusiness and manufacturing.

He noted that the plant will complement the county government’s flagship Likuyani Smart Farm in Sango Ward by ensuring a reliable supply of quality and affordable animal feeds for farmers, with the integration of the two projects expected to enhance livestock productivity, lower production costs, and promote modern farming practices across the county.

“Empowering cooperatives and supporting local industries remains central to our economic transformation agenda,” Barasa said, adding that such investments are critical in positioning Kakamega County as a leading agricultural economy while improving household incomes and enhancing food security.

The Governor also highlighted plans to establish a textile industry in the area, expected to create employment for hundreds of youth and women and pointed to the joint Likuyani Industrial Park, road infrastructure improvements, and other ongoing projects as evidence of the productive collaboration between the national and county governments.
