Nyong’o: Aquaculture Centre will provide alternative sources of fish production methods

Kisumu County Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o has revealed that the recently commissioned Kabonyo Fisheries and Aquaculture Service and Training Centre of Excellence will provide alternative sources of fish production methods that will help reduce excess fishing pressure on Lake Victoria.

The governor stated that the centre will serve East and Central Africa region and collaborate with regional organizations hence make Kisumu a regional hub for aquaculture.

He noted that some of the beneficiaries of the project will be the immediate Kabonyo Kanyagwal Community, Beach Management Units, Smallholder and Medium Scale Producers, research organizations, Fisheries and Aquaculture services, learning institutions, local administrations, fish traders and processors among other value chain actors.

The governor noted that the construction of the Koru-Soin Dam will be an important strategy to help tame flooding in Kabonyo Kanyagwal area.

The dam will also support irrigation in Kano plains.
