- The push aims to protect members while expanding financial inclusion.
SACCO Central Kenya (SCK) has been challenged to strengthen its financial resilience, improve shared services and embrace innovation to remain competitive as Kenya’s cooperative financial sector undergoes rapid transformation.
Principal Secretary for Cooperatives Patrick Kilemi said the Government remains committed to initiatives aimed at strengthening the Sacco movement and enhancing its contribution to financial inclusion, economic growth and improved livelihoods.
Kilemi participated in discussions on the current status and strategic direction of SACCO Central Kenya, with a focus on positioning the institution to better support the growth and resilience of Sacco societies.
The talks placed emphasis on strengthening shared services, improving operational efficiency and building the financial capacity of Saccos to withstand emerging economic pressures while exploiting new opportunities in the financial sector.
SCK plays a critical role in supporting Sacco societies through financial and shared services, making its strategic direction important to the wider cooperative movement, which continues to provide millions of Kenyans with access to savings, credit and other financial services.
The discussions also highlighted the need for greater innovation across the cooperative financial sector as Saccos face changing consumer expectations, technological disruption and increasing competition from banks, fintech companies and other financial service providers.
The Government said stronger institutions, sound governance, efficient systems and sustainable financial models would be essential in ensuring that Saccos remain relevant and competitive.

Strengthening shared services, enhancing financial resilience and advancing initiatives that promote efficiency, innovation and sustainable growth were among the key priorities highlighted during the engagement.
The State Department for Cooperatives said it would continue working with stakeholders to strengthen the Sacco ecosystem and create an environment in which cooperative societies can expand their services while protecting members’ savings and investments.
The Government’s wider cooperative agenda brings together key institutions and organisations, including the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), New KPCU PLC, KUSCCO Ltd and New Kenya Cooperative Creameries.
The push to strengthen the sector comes at a time when Saccos are increasingly being relied upon as an important vehicle for financial inclusion, particularly by households, farmers, workers, small businesses and other groups seeking affordable credit and opportunities to build savings.
Kilemi said the cooperative sector must continue to evolve by embracing technology, improving efficiency and developing sustainable approaches capable of responding to the changing needs of members.
The Government sees a stronger Sacco movement as critical to expanding access to financial services and supporting economic empowerment, particularly among millions of Kenyans who may face barriers to accessing conventional banking services.
For SCK, the strategic discussions provide an opportunity to sharpen its role as a support institution for Saccos while ensuring that shared services deliver greater value to member societies.
The emphasis on resilience is also expected to encourage Saccos to strengthen their governance, risk management systems and financial planning as they navigate an increasingly competitive financial environment.
The State Department for Cooperatives maintained that sustained collaboration between Government agencies, regulators and cooperative institutions would be necessary to build a stronger, more innovative and financially secure Sacco movement.
The Government’s message is clear: for Saccos to remain a powerful pillar of Kenya’s financial inclusion agenda, they must combine their traditional strength in member mobilisation and savings with modern technology, stronger institutions, sound financial management and innovative services.
The ongoing engagement with SCK is therefore expected to contribute to broader efforts to build a cooperative financial sector capable of supporting sustainable economic development and improving the financial wellbeing of Kenyans.
