Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Dr. Wycliffe Oparanya has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s cooperative movement, as the country marked the 104th Ushirika Day celebrations at Uhuru Park, Nairobi County, under the global theme “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World.”

Speaking at the event, Oparanya said the occasion reaffirmed the vital role of the cooperative movement in promoting economic inclusion, creating opportunities and fostering shared prosperity for millions of Kenyans.

Oparanya said the Ministry has undertaken far-reaching reforms to strengthen the sector and enhance its contribution to national development.

Key among these, he said, is the Cooperative Bill, which is currently at the mediation stage, as well as proposed amendments to the SACCO Bill aimed at improving governance, accountability, innovation and the overall resilience of cooperative institutions.

Oparanya said the government is also revitalizing the coffee subsector through stronger cooperative societies to ensure farmers receive better returns and sustainable livelihoods. “A vibrant cooperative movement remains one of the most effective pathways to wealth creation, job opportunities and poverty reduction,” he said.

This year’s event marked the 104th edition of the International Day of Cooperatives, popularly known locally as Ushirika Day. The celebrations began with a procession from the Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (KPCU) headquarters along Haile Selassie Avenue to Uhuru Park, culminating in the main ceremony attended by cooperative leaders, government officials and members drawn from societies and unions across the country.

Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) Chief Executive Officer Daniel Marube said the theme “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World,” highlights the critical role cooperatives play in fostering peace, economic resilience and sustainable development, noting that peace is a prerequisite for economic growth since businesses thrive in stable environments where investment, production and trade can flourish.
