Two cooperative societies in Kilifi County are set for revival as the county government rolls out strategic plans to strengthen grassroots economic empowerment. The initiative targets Galana Farmers Cooperative Society in Gede, Malindi sub‑county, and Magarini Sand Harvesting Cooperative Society in Mjanaheri, Magarini sub‑county, both of which collapsed several years ago.
Speaking to Sacco Review in Malindi town, Malindi sub‑county Cooperative Officer Mrs Felister Moraa Ziro confirmed that the revival process is already underway. She said the move will encourage residents to join in large numbers and invest heavily, enabling them to access bigger loans to finance personal development projects. “Joining Saccos is therefore the right direction to go,” she observed.
Mrs Ziro emphasised that the success of the revived cooperatives will depend on strong leadership and sound governance. She urged Sacco officials to embrace transparency, accountability, integrity, and honesty in their daily operations to build trust among members. She also cautioned members against loan defaults, noting that poor repayment habits have contributed to the collapse of many cooperative societies across the country.

The Cooperative Officer further advised members to borrow wisely and repay promptly to ensure sustainability and allow others to benefit from loan products. She stressed that discipline in borrowing and repayment is essential for the long‑term survival of cooperative institutions.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ziro revealed that Manyeso Dairy Cooperative Society, which had collapsed some years back, has already been revived by the county government and will soon resume operations. The revival of Manyeso, she said, demonstrates the county’s commitment to restoring confidence in cooperative societies and unlocking their potential to drive local development.
