President William Ruto on Thursday, August 14, officially launched the Awendo Affordable Housing Project, the Ksh750 million initiative which will deliver 293 modern housing units within the next 12 months.

The development is located on a 1.8-acre site adjacent to the Awendo Mosque

According to the plan, the project will feature two high-rise residential blocks, a 14-storey tower with 165 units and a 15-storey tower with 128 units. Residents will enjoy access to landscaped green spaces, a community centre, playground, parking facilities, a garbage receptacle, guardhouse, powerhouse, and internal access roads.

Speaking during the handover of the site to contractor M/S Ellys Engineering Works Limited, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting living standards and stimulating economic growth across all counties.

“This project provides undeniable evidence that my government is promoting development in all regions equally,” he said. “Awendo’s skyline is about to change in ways that directly benefit residents, business owners, and define modern living.”

According to President Ruto, the construction phase will employ 440 workers, with the Migori Jua Kali sector receiving ring-fenced contracts worth over Ksh249 million for the supply of windows, doors, and balustrades.

This deliberate inclusion aims to retain a substantial portion of project expenditure within the local economy.

Ruto emphasized that the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) is designed to activate economic activity in town centres, ensuring no region is left behind. Local transporters, food vendors, salon operators, and matatu drivers are expected to benefit from increased business as the project unfolds.

He added that the project shall also serve as a skills development platform, offering on-the-job training in masonry, plumbing, electrical wiring, painting, landscaping, welding, whereby trainees will be certified by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
